Salone del Mobile.Milano presented an installation by American filmmaker David Lynch, in the form of two meditation rooms. Porsche Design was founded in 1972 as a design studio; production was handled by long-standing partner companies. The famous Chronograph 1, for example, was produced by Swiss watchmaker Orfina. In 1978, Porsche Design entered into a partnership with industry giant IWC. This collaboration spanned almost 20 years and brought forth many interesting timepieces. Interestingly enough, Porsche Design has for the first outing of the watch configurator restricted itself to a single chronograph model, but this decision is easier to understand when you look at the number of possible variations.
The web-based watch configurator, which is based on the well-known Porsche car configurator, allows for approximately 1.5 million different design configurations to create a one-of-a-kind timepiece. The Porsche chronographs are available in different versions with two or three separate timekeepers and a stopwatch feature. The movement offers only the time and date, with the seconds displayed in an inset subdial at 6 o’clock. This is simple and refined design that serves the brand’s stated mission of maintaining functionality and legibility at all times. The indices and hands (including the seconds hand) are well lumed, and the dial has a subtle circular brushing that gives it a sunburst effect without too much distracting reflection. There’s visual interest in the three-dimensional elements such as the sloping ring around the dial where the indices are printed, and the details hold up under the scrutiny of a loupe.
The watches have a mechanism that allows you to easily set the local time in one-hour increments using two push-pieces. You can also choose between cases made of sandblasted or black-coated titanium, as well as rose gold. Watches made of rose gold, on the other hand, cost almost 26,000 USD – a tenfold increase in price. Prices on Chrono24 for the Porsche Design by IWC Compass 3551 in a black aluminum case and featuring a moonphase display at 12 o'clock come in at around 2,100 USD in good condition. If you're a fan of Porsche Design's brushed titanium watches, such as the ref. 3511, you can expect to pay around 4,100 USD.
Impressive build, refined design, excellent finishing, technical and exotic material…these should all be considered in assessing the value proposition of a watch, and Porsche Design delivers them (along with a prestigious name). At just shy of $5,000, however, it’s competing with brands that offer the likes of in-house movements and other attractive features. The watch is powered by a chronometer-certified Sellita SW261-1 (in the Sellita SW200 family of common automatic movements) with some customized decoration — which you won’t see anyway, as it’s hidden behind a solid case back. In addition to watches, Porsche Design's product portfolio includes sunglasses, bags, shoes, and casual wear.
Depending on the exact model, these timepieces offer additional functions such as a small seconds, second time zone, and date display. Prices start at $6,000 and go up to $12,500 depending on options chosen and configuration. If you take all the possible configurations into account, there are, says the Studio, some 1.5 million possible versions (there are some 300 or so possible variations on the strap alone).
